A strong earthquake shakes the Ayacucho region and generates alarm in southern Peru

A strong earthquake occurred on the afternoon of this Thursday, August 20, in the south of the Peruvian territory, causing alarm among the inhabitants of the Ayacucho region and surrounding areas. The earthquake occurred at 1:00 p.m. (local time), according to data provided by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

The institution's technical report states that the event reached a magnitude of 7.2. The epicenter of the movement was located in the city of Coracora, belonging to the province of Parinacochas, in the southern part of the Ayacucho department.

In addition, the specialized agency explained that the earthquake had a depth of 108 kilometers. This characteristic allowed seismic waves to spread strongly to different locations in the center and south of the country.

After the shock, local authorities and risk management services began monitoring in areas close to the epicenter to assess possible damage to infrastructure and verify the status of affected communities.
