Alexis Cedres is Venezuela's new men's senior coach

The Venezuelan Basketball Federation (FVB) informs public opinion of the appointment of Venezuelan coach Alexis Cedres as the new men's national senior coach.

The 38-year-old Portuguese coach began his training at the age of 19. He has a degree in Physical Education. After a period in the training teams of his home state, his career as technical director began at the helm of Centauros de Portuguesa, a team he managed for three seasons: SPB 2022, SPB 2023 and SPB 2024. He was previously the technical assistant for that group.

In the 2022 campaign, he received the Coach of the Year award and reached the semifinals of the tournament. He also advanced to the postseason in the 2023 season. In SPB 2025 he directed Brillantes del Zulia.

Professor Cedres joined the national selection process in 2023, when he assumed the role of assistant coach of the men's senior team. He was present in the Daniel Seoane, Ronald Guillén and Francisco Segura cycles.

In 2024, he was appointed head coach of the men's U15 team, and with the first generation he led, he made history: he won the title of the 2024 South American Under-15 Championship, won the bronze medal in the FIBA AmeriCup U-16 2025 and qualified Venezuela to the FIBA U17 World Cup 2026.

Under his guidance, Venezuela won its fourth South American men's title in training categories in history, took the American podium in training for the second time and played its fourth World Cup in training categories, and the first since 2003.

FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Preclassifier: the start of the cycle

The Venezuelan men's national team will return to the tabloncillo in November of this year, at home. The national team will compete in the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Preclassifier at the Gymnasium Ciudad de la Asunción, from November 26 to 28.

Eight teams will participate in this event, divided into two groups from four countries respectively. Group A will be played at the Alexis Argüello Sports Center in Managua, Nicaragua. Group B, on Margarita Island.

Each team will play once against their group rivals and the two best countries in each group will advance to the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Qualifiers, beginning in November 2027. The national teams that will participate alongside Nicaragua and Venezuela will be announced later.

This will be the first competition of the Venezuelan senior team under the technical direction of Professor Alexis Cedres, who a month earlier, from October 21 to 25, will lead the men's U15 team in the South American Qualifier to the FIBA AmeriCup U-16 2027. A new cycle has begun for the Venezuelan men's national basketball team.
