Artists in Gaza dedicate a mural to rapper Macklemore in recognition of his support for the Palestinian cause

A group of visual artists in the Gaza Strip painted a mural on the rubble of a destroyed structure to express their gratitude to the American rapper Macklemore, in recognition of his continuous public expressions of solidarity with the Palestinian population.

The work, made on a large concrete slab amidst the ruins of Gaza City, portrays the musician wrapped in the Palestinian flag with the message “Thank you for using your voice for Palestine”. Gazan artist Anne Radwa highlighted the relevance of the tribute, noting that the interpreter raised his voice on international stages and dedicated his artistic work to denounce the situation in the Palestinian enclave.

The recognition comes after the recent controversy in which Macklemore was excluded as opening act for British singer Ed Sheeran's international tour, due to pressures linked to his expressions of support for Palestine during his performances.

In response, the rapper allocated one million dollars to humanitarian aid funds for the Palestinian people and reaffirmed that the right to freedom, dignity and security of the civilian population must prevail.

The decision of the tour organizers also generated a wave of solidarity in the music industry, where artists Aaron Rowe, Beoga, Lukas Graham and Finneas presented their resignation from the tour in protest against censorship against the American musician. The expressions of affection from the Gaza Strip are added to the messages and videos released by displaced children and families who appreciate public support in the midst of the conflict.
