Border flood kills more than a thousand in Nepal and China

The combined balance of the Nepalese and Chinese authorities after the flood that hit the border area on August 26 now exceeds a thousand deaths, with 1 thousand 3 confirmed dead, of whom 987 bodies were recovered in Nepalese territory and 16 in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRMA) reduced the number of missing persons in Nepal to 3,916, following the progressive reestablishment of telecommunications, which included the reactivation of 110 telephone towers and made it possible to locate some of those who were listed as untraceable. The global number of unlocated people amounts to 4,462, including Nepalese, Chinese and foreigners, Telesur reported.

Among the missing population, there are 583 foreigners from 39 countries, although the authorities managed to establish contact with three citizens of Spanish nationality, according to the agency. The rescue efforts bring together more than 21,000 members of the Army, Police and Armed Police Force, who are advancing by land and air in a strip of more than 150 kilometers devastated by the disaster.

The uncertainty is concentrated in the tunnels of hydroelectric projects, where the payroll of workers reported missing fell from 933 to 639, and emergency teams are verifying if some remain trapped in the underground galleries of the affected energy complexes. The authorities warned that the count is still open as long as the operations do not reach the entire affected area.
