Brazil activates monitoring plan to contain economic impact in the face of El Niño

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock
launched an intensified monitoring plan for the development of the El Niño
climate phenomenon in the equatorial Pacific, which includes preventive measures,
evaluation of rural insurance and constant monitoring of
production costs and the price of food.
According to the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) of the National
Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States (USA), there is a 97% chance that the
event will intensify until the end of 2026, so Brazilian authorities are
seeking to mitigate its effects on the economy and the agricultural sector for the 2026/2027 campaign.
To implement the plan, various state entities,
including the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET), the
National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense, Cemaden and the National
Water Agency, have unified their efforts to disseminate the El Niño Panel Bulletin 2026-2027.
The alarms went off due to the atypical increase in sea
temperatures in the Pacific recorded since May. According to the International Research
Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) at Columbia University, the average Niño 3.4 index reached an
anomaly of 2.1 °C, so the highest peak is projected to peak between
October and December, international media report.
