Brazil warns CELAC about the erosion of multilateralism and promotes a woman for the UN

During a ministerial meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held in New York, the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, warned of the progressive relatization of national sovereignty and the weakening of multilateral schemes, in a context marked by growing diplomatic tensions and interference in the region.

According to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, the head of diplomacy urged member countries to maintain cohesion in defense of international law and the principle of non-interference, a position that lays the basis for the speech that the delegation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will hold during the session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In addition, Vieira called on the unity of CELAC to present and support a unique regional candidacy for the General Secretariat of the United Nations. Within the framework of the principle of geographical rotation, the foreign minister reiterated Brazil's firm position to promote that, for the first time in history, the highest position of the international organization be held by a woman from Latin America and the Caribbean, in place of António Guterres, whose term ends this year.
