The National Academy of Sciences of India (INSA) led the first virtual meeting of the Forum of Science Academies of the BRICS countries, focused on the use of artificial intelligence as an engine of sustainable development in the Global South. The meeting brought together representatives from ten nations, including Brazil, China, Russia, Egypt and South Africa, with the purpose of establishing a common road map for harnessing technology in strategic areas such as health, agriculture, education and climate modeling.

During the session, the president of INSA, Shekhar Mande, stressed the need for artificial intelligence to transcend theoretical dialogue and become a “practical tool” that promotes inclusion. Delegates paid special attention to the existing digital divide between nations and agreed on the urgency of democratizing access to technological resources, avoiding exclusive dependence on centralized models currently predominant in the global market.

Among the agreements reached, member countries highlighted the creation of shared computing infrastructure and the development of joint platforms for the exchange of scientific data. The proposals also included the promotion of free software and the development of multilingual language models, adapted to the linguistic and social peculiarities of the nations of the bloc, seeking more equitable and sovereign results for regional science.

The conclusions of the forum will be consolidated in an official statement that will be ratified at a face-to-face meeting scheduled for July 2026 at the Indian Institute of Technology in Hyderabad. This advance marks a firm step in scientific cooperation under the current presidency of India, which seeks to consolidate public digital infrastructure and collaboration between researchers as fundamental pillars for the economic and social growth of the BRICS+ block.
