Chileans commemorate 53 years of the coup d'etat with tributes to Salvador Allende

Various social organizations, human rights groups and citizens in Chile commemorate this Friday, September 11, the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 civic-military coup d'etat. The day includes marches, parties and acts of tribute to former President Salvador Allende and the victims of the dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet, with mobilizations organized in different parts of the Chilean territory.

The tribute activities began in the early hours of the morning with emblematic rallies, especially the floral offering at Allende's grave in the General Cemetery and the pilgrimage held in the Plaza de la Constitución. In addition, the attendees took a tour from Alameda Avenue to 80 Morandé Street, where the president's body was removed after the bombing of the Palacio de La Moneda on September 11, 1973.

At the national level, the National Network of Places of Memory promotes a commemorative agenda that includes meetings at the San Marcos Cathedral in Arica, marches from Plaza Colón in Antofagasta, velatones in Coquimbo and mobilizations towards the Green Tiles Regiment in the Valparaíso region. Through these days in former detention and torture centers, the groups reiterated the demand for guarantees of non-repetition in the face of systematic violations of human rights.

This year's commemoration takes place amid political debates about initiatives to grant pardons to former agents of the dictatorship. Faced with this situation, members of the Group of Relatives of Disappeared Detainees demonstrated in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice under slogans rejecting the measures of grace, claiming the memory of the more than 40,000 people executed, arrested, tortured and exiled during the military regime.
