China evacuated 1.7 million people due to Typhoon Bavi

Typhoon Bavi left at least 87 people injured in Taiwan this Saturday, July 11, caused five minor injuries in Japan and forced the evacuation of 1.71 million people in the Chinese province of Zhejiang (east), where the storm is expected to make landfall in the early morning of Sunday after causing massive air cancellations and rain alerts.

The official Xinhua agency reported that Zhejiang evacuated 1.71 million people and closed 12,154 schools and kindergartens, 444 tourist sites and 78 cultural venues.

He noted that Zhejiang raised its typhoon emergency response to level one, the highest, as Bavi approaches its central and southern coast. At 14:00 local time, the National Meteorological Center located the center of the typhoon about 290 kilometers east of the border between Zhejiang and Fujian, over the southeastern East China Sea.

According to the official forecast, Bavi will advance to the northwest at between 30 and 35 kilometers per hour and will make landfall around midnight or early Sunday morning between Sanmen and Cangnan, in Zhejiang, with winds of level 12 to 13, before entering the country and weakening.

Bavi also caused massive cancellations at airports in eastern China and Taiwan, with activity practically paralyzed in terminals such as Wenzhou and Fuzhou, according to the specialized portal Feichangzhun.

The National Meteorological Center of China maintains the orange typhoon alert and issued the first red alert of the year for rains, with a forecast of torrential rainfall in Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan and other regions in the east and north of the country.

Bavi comes after a week of natural disasters in China, marked by rains associated with typhoon Maysak, which left at least 39 dead in Guangxi; a landslide in Gansu, with 21 dead, and storms and tornados in Hubei, with eleven dead.
