China urges UN to defend multilateral trading system

The Vice President of the People's Republic of China, Han Zheng, urged this Saturday before the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) to safeguard a multilateral trading system based on rules and the World Trade Organization (WTO), and to reject the Cold War mentality and confrontation between blocs.

During his speech, Zheng highlighted the need to promote an open world economy and achieve an inclusive globalization that benefits everyone. “We must safeguard a multilateral trading system based on rules and the WTO, promote an open world economy, and jointly promote and reinforce new engines of growth,” he said, quoted by international media.

The Chinese vice president also called for dialogue among civilizations and the strengthening of mutual trust. “To promote exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations and to recover unity and mutual trust through communication and dialogue,” he said.

He also defended the international system centered on the UN and the order that emerged after the Second World War. “The world wants peace and not war; the international system must defend itself,” he said, while calling for “resolving differences and controversies through dialogue and consultation” and opposing unilateral military actions that violate the UN Charter.
