Colombia: Forest fires consume more than 285 hectares of vegetation in Cundinamarca

The fire departments of the department of Cundinamarca, in Colombia, dealt with a total of 16 forest fires during the last 24 hours, of which nine originated on that same day. The series of emergencies has left a preliminary balance of 285.5 hectares affected by vegetation cover, a provisional figure that authorities expect to increase as field evaluations are completed.

The largest outbreak occurred in the Tolemaida sector, under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Nilo, where the flames destroyed nearly 250 hectares before achieving total liquidation. This event individually represented approximately 88% of the total area devastated in the departmental territory during this contingency period.

Despite the fact that relief agencies managed to extinguish ten conflagrations and control three additional ones, attention is focused on three active hotbeds located in the municipalities of Fúquene, Vergara and Sibaté. Meanwhile, in the town of Villeta, the fire reached 80% control after affecting areas dedicated to the cultivation of cane, bananas, coffee and cassava.

Faced with the vulnerability of agricultural and forest areas, the Government of Cundinamarca confirmed the sending of helicoptered support to reinforce water discharge and air containment operations. Relief brigades and local authorities maintain permanent monitoring in critical areas to prevent the reactivation of flames due to adverse winds and weather conditions.
