The National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) authorized the company Starlink to provide satellite internet services in Venezuela, after approving the general authorization HGTS-00639 and seven general concessions in the Ku band to the commercial company SPACEX VZ, S.C.A.

The decision, adopted by the organization's Board of Directors, will allow the company to formally operate in the national territory under Venezuelan legislation and with domicile and oversight in the country.

The authorization was finalized after the company participated in face-to-face and remote meetings with CONATEL to learn about the Venezuelan legal framework and formalize its request.

It is important to remember that this process has as its precedent the technical tests carried out after the earthquakes of June 24, when CONATEL granted temporary permits to evaluate new satellite connectivity technologies, due to the effects of terrestrial telephone and internet infrastructures in the state of La Guaira.

The tests made it possible to verify the operation of Direct to Device (D2D) technology, which facilitates the sending of text messages (SMS) between the three mobile operators in the country through a satellite network.

The operation in the Ku band was also evaluated with flexible Equivalent Power Flow Density (EPFD) limits, to meet the connection demand in the affected area.

With the approval, CONATEL seeks to promote the incorporation of new technologies and maintain the ordering of the radio spectrum in the country.
