Death toll from the earthquake in Colombia increases to 25

The death toll rose to 25 and dozens were injured after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Colombia at 07:34 local time this Monday, authorities said.

The earthquake, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, hit Pereira and Manizales especially hard, where most of the fatalities are concentrated, while rescue teams are working in Cali to locate people trapped under the rubble of about twenty collapsed buildings, Ok Diario reported.

The earthquake, which also caused structural damage in Quibdó and affected the cathedral of Manizales, had two aftershocks of magnitude 4.8 and 4.6 in the same area of the epicenter.

The tremor was felt beyond the Colombian borders with preventive evacuations in several areas of Panama, where the movement lasted for about a minute, and in provinces in the north and the coast of Ecuador. Despite the intensity of the earthquake, Colombia's General Maritime Directorate ruled out any risk of a tsunami on the Pacific coast while damage assessments and search operations continue in the affected regions.
