Deputies of Mexico approve reform that prohibits dual nationality for the Presidency and governorships

In particular, the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico approved the constitutional reform promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which prohibits dual nationality for those who aspire to hold the office of the federal Executive, state governments or the Head of Government of Mexico City.

The initiative, backed by 334 votes in favor and 109 against after an extensive debate in the plenary, contemplates the amendment of articles 82, 116 and 122 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States. With this amendment, it is established as a mandatory requirement not to hold a second nationality to qualify for the highest executive representative positions in the country.

From the rostrum, the ruling bloc defended the measure, arguing that it represents a fundamental step to protect State institutions, guarantee exclusive commitment to the nation and strengthen Mexican sovereignty against possible factors of foreign interference. After its approval in the Lower House, the bill was sent to the Senate to continue with its corresponding legislative process.
