Earthquake of magnitude 4.4 was recorded in the municipality of Istmina in the department of Chocó

An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 shook the department of Chocó this Thursday morning, August 27, with an epicenter located in the municipality of Istmina, according to the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC). The earthquake occurred at 10:25 a.m. (local time) and was perceived in various areas of the west of the country, including towns in the department of Valle del Cauca.

According to the technical report of the supervisory body, the earthquake recorded a depth of 43 kilometers. Among the towns closest to the epicentral area are the Chocoan municipalities of Sipí, 17 kilometers away, and Nóvita, 49 kilometers away, as well as El Dovio in Valle del Cauca, 56 kilometers away.

So far, relief agencies and local risk management authorities have not reported victims, injuries or material damage to the infrastructure of communities in the sector. Territorial units keep preventive sweeps active to rule out any unforeseen events in rural areas.

The Colombian Geological Survey reiterated the importance of remaining calm during this type of natural event and consulting only institutional channels to follow up on seismic update bulletins in the region.
