Earthquake of magnitude 5.4 shakes northern Peru during the early morning

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 shook the northern region of Peru in the early hours of this Thursday, with an epicenter in the province of Condorcanqui, department of Amazonas, according to the authorities of the National Seismological Center.

The earthquake, which occurred during the early morning hours, generated alarm in the Amazonian border towns and immediately activated evaluation protocols in the surrounding urban and rural areas.

According to official reports issued by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), the seismic event was located 92 kilometers northeast of the city of Santa María de Nieva, reaching a depth of 15 kilometers.

The technical institution specified that the main shock was followed by a sequence of lower intensity aftershocks in the same territorial demarcation, keeping seismic monitoring stations deployed throughout the geographical area of northern Peru.

After the earthquake, the agencies of the National Disaster Risk Management System and the Civil Defense brigades began tracking structural and public service effects in communities in the department of Amazonas.

So far, local authorities have not reported fatalities or significant material damage, maintaining calls for prevention to citizens in the face of the possible occurrence of secondary movements.

This seismic activity responds to the geographical condition of the South American nation, located in the so-called Pacific Fire Belt, an area of high tectonic convergence where the largest number of telluric events on the planet are concentrated. Faced with this seismic vulnerability, state authorities reiterate the importance of strengthening community self-protection measures and permanent coordination with relief institutions.
