Ebola has been reported to spread to two new provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to the northeastern provinces of Tshopo and Haut-Uele, according to official data released by that nation's National Institute of Public Health. To date, health authorities have confirmed a cumulative total of 1,926 cases of infection and 702 deaths in the national territory, keeping health agencies on alert to the progress of the epidemic.

In the breakdown of the new reports, the authorities detailed that in the province of Tshopo there have been four confirmed cases, including two deaths, while in Haut-Uele there was one death from this cause until last Saturday.

Initial epidemiological investigations suggest that the infections detected in these localities originated mainly in the Nya Nya area, located in the province of Ituri, a situation that has led the health institute to stress the importance of urgently expanding and strengthening surveillance measures in vulnerable areas.

On the other hand, the spread of the virus to these new geographical areas has set off alarm bells due to the region's complex geopolitical context. Experts and health authorities warn that the deep political and military divisions existing in these provinces could seriously hamper the health response, hindering the deployment of assistance teams and complicating the logistical efforts necessary to effectively control the spread of the disease.
