Ecuador: Investigation into the death of social activist Monika Silva Koniuszek in Santa Elena

The body of social activist Monika Silva Koniuszek, president of the Integrity Foundation and renowned neighborhood leader, was found dead this Monday, June 8, at her home located in the province of Santa Elena, Ecuador. After receiving citizen alerts, agents of the National Police went to the site to begin the corresponding proceedings, in a case that has generated profound social upheaval due to the active trajectory of the deceased as a citizen overseer.

Silva had recently stood out for leading high-impact complaints related to land trafficking, money laundering and administrative irregularities involving public officials, political actors and power groups in the Peninsula. His most prominent investigations included the so-called Bellitec Case, concerning the allegedly irregular sale of 700 hectares in Capaes, and the Jenny Ramírez Case, which pointed to possible anomalies in land management during the administration of the mayor of La Libertad, Francisco Tamariz.

The activist also maintained a critical stance against the Office of the Comptroller General of the State, whose top representatives she accused of articulating networks of nepotism and influence peddling to hinder judicial investigations.

In previous months, Silva had publicly reported being the subject of threats against his life and held the State directly responsible for any act of violence against him, also pointing out that he had been the victim of criminal complaints filed as a way of silencing his oversight work.

Although the Ministry of the Interior has stated that the first investigations point to an alleged suicide, the official version has been met with skepticism on the part of social organizations and citizens.

Given the history of complaints and the fears expressed by the activist, various sectors demand the initiation of an independent, exhaustive and transparent investigation process to clarify the circumstances of her death and ensure that there is no impunity for the serious allegations she had made.
