The Government of Colombia today confirmed the beginning of the El Niño phenomenon and warned of the possibility that the weather event will reach a very strong intensity between November and January.
As reported by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, quoted by the Prensa Latina page, the conditions associated with the phenomenon are already present in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and are expected to strengthen during the second half of this year, with a possible persistence until winter in the Northern Hemisphere, between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027. The portfolio warned that it was presented about three months earlier than originally planned.
The ministry recalled the most recent updates from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which warn of a 96 percent probability of continuing conditions associated with the phenomenon during the November-December-January quarter, as well as a 63 percent chance that it will reach a very strong intensity in that same period.
With the beginning of the phenomenon, the ministry remarked, national early warning has been activated to strengthen the monitoring of weather conditions, institutional preparation and information and coordination processes with regions and communities.
