El Salvador: FMLN ratifies Rafael Aguirre and Madaí Santos's presidential formula for the 2027 elections

The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) party confirmed that it will compete in the next presidential elections in El Salvador, scheduled for 2027, with the formula comprised of social leader Rafael Aguirre and nursing professional Madaí Santos.

The ratification of the candidacy took place within the framework of the 47th Ordinary General Assembly of the political organization, headed by its general secretary, Manuel Flores. During the meeting, Flores presented the duo as the opposition alternative in the face of the presidential race and questioned the management of the current Government in terms of transparency in the management of public resources.

In his statements to the media, presidential candidate Rafael Aguirre said that the candidacy seeks to articulate the support of social movements. He also stressed that the party platform will serve as an institutional vehicle to strengthen the territorial presence and deploy the electoral proposal throughout the country. The proposal led by Aguirre and Santos was the only form submitted during the internal day.

After a reform approved by the Salvadoran Congress that brought forward the electoral calendar, presidential, legislative and municipal elections will be held simultaneously on February 28, 2027. According to the official schedule, the electoral campaign period will begin on October 27, 2026 and will end on February 24, 2027.
