Eliécer Romero and José Félix Quintero gave Venezuela its first fencing medals at the XIII South American Santa Fe Games 2026.
In a fratricidal duel in the semifinals, Romero dominated his compatrician 15-10 to advance to the final against local Pascual Di Tella, who dominated the fight 15-12 to win the gold medal.
” I tried to be reassured by the arbitration decisions. But these are situations that we have to manage. More competencies are coming. World Cups are already on their way to Los Angeles 2028, where we can also qualify by teams,” said the Yaracuyan.
It is Romero's third silver medal in the South American Games, where he also added two gold medals.
“We know each other quite well, we are practically in the cadet category, competing together. We have clashed on many occasions. It's a fight where either of us can win. In this event I managed to win,” Romero said of the confrontation with Quintero, after the award ceremony at the Salvador Bonilla Stadium of the Provincial Athletic Club.
Quintero won his sixth medal in the South American Games with medals in four consecutive editions.
“Happy to give this victory to Venezuela. It was a long day, but we prepared for this and gave this achievement to Venezuela. We are very compacted. Working hard and now we have the team test left where we hope to do a good job,” said the Larense.
In the women's foil, Isis Giménez and Anabella Acurero were in the quarterfinals.
This Monday, the women's individual sword and the men's individual foil will be contested.
