Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Indonesia

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 shook the morning of this Saturday, August 15 (local time), the Flores Sea, off the east coast of the homonymous island, in Indonesia, reported the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, reported the Russia Today website.

According to that entity, the epicenter was located 162 kilometers east of the town of Labuan Bajo, while the estimated depth of the hypocenter was 35 kilometers.

For its part, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) agreed on the estimate of the magnitude, but estimated the depth at 10 kilometers. It is also indicated that it originated 68 kilometers northwest of Ende.

On the other hand, the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning Center issued a level 2 alert for the West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi regions, while estimating the depth of the hypocenter at 15 kilometers.

The agency specifies that, in this case, “provincial, district and municipal governments that are in a state of 'Alert' are expected to pay attention and immediately order the evacuation of the community.”

In accordance with the localized nature of the tsunami warning issued by Jakarta, both the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy and the Colombian Maritime Authority ruled out risks associated with this phenomenon on the South American Pacific coast.

Videos have begun to circulate on social networks that show the damage caused by the earthquake, such as collapsed buildings and fallen wooden ceilings. There have been no reports of fatalities.

According to the USGS, there have been four aftershocks of magnitude greater than 5.5 in the earthquake area. The largest of these, which occurred about 40 minutes after the main event, had a magnitude of 6.1.
