Foreign Minister Plasencia participated in Interactive Dialogue with regional candidates for the UN General Secretariat

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Félix Plasencia González, participated this Monday in the Interactive Dialogue of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), convened by the Pro Tempore Presidency of Uruguay, with candidates from the region for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations (UN).

“We stress that this process represents an historic opportunity to project the region's leadership in the United Nations, based on respect for international law, the peaceful resolution of disputes and the construction of consensus,” said the foreign minister on his social networks.

He also called for strategic action and a spirit of cohesion, guided by the principle of “unity in diversity”.

In addition, during his speech, he reaffirmed that a more united Latin America and the Caribbean will strengthen both the multilateral system and the role of the United Nations.

In this sense, “consolidating CELAC is essential to deepen regional integration, promote common positions in the face of global challenges and move forward for the benefit of our peoples,” said Minister Plasencia González.

He assured that the region has a long tradition of commitment to diplomacy, international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes. “Our region has the experience, talent and profiles necessary for this responsibility,” he said.

The diplomat stressed that “for Venezuela, the best candidate will be the one who demonstrates a firm commitment to the values of the Organization and to the Charter of the United Nations.”

He also added that the most suitable candidate must have “the capacity to build bridges and build the consensus that the world needs today to overcome the multiple challenges before us, many of which are common to us.”

On behalf of the president in charge Delcy Rodríguez, he thanked “all the support and solidarity of the brothers in Latin America and the Caribbean, after the two terrible earthquakes that affected our country.”
