The French National Weather Service (Météo-France) declared an orange alert in 67 departments for August 12 in the face of a heat wave that could reach 40°C in several regions, including the capital.

The episode of extreme temperatures also extends to Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal.

The France-Presse agency reported that the nuclear power plants owned by the operator EDF registered record levels of inactivity due to thermal conditions.

For its part, the newspaper Le Monde estimates economic losses of between 3 thousand and 6 billion euros, while forest fires have destroyed more than 116 thousand hectares, a figure that is ten times the annual average.
