FUNVISIS: Frequency and magnitude of aftershocks from the earthquakes of June 24 continue to decline

The frequency and magnitude of aftershocks in Venezuela after the earthquakes of last June 24 remains in decline, despite the recent uptick recorded this Tuesday, August 18, in the state of La Guaira, reported the director of the Department of Earthquake Geology of the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (FUNVISIS), Luz María Rodríguez.

In an interview with Venezolana de Televisión, he said that “the decrease in frequency and magnitude continues, although there may be peaks and then a relapse; statistically and worldwide this happens.”

He explained that the 4.0 seismic event recorded in the early morning of this Tuesday, August 18, occurred superficially, which caused it to be perceived by several people and maintained that after the event, no major damage has been reported.

He reaffirmed that in the coming months the occurrence of aftershocks will continue, and the population must remain vigilant, in addition to remembering the seismic nature of Venezuelan soil.

“Having replicas is not a separate or isolated event; it's the same reformation zone and that readjustment of that plate that needs to continue releasing energy in order to readjust,” he added.

In this regard, Rodríguez stressed that technical teams continue to carry out fieldwork evaluating the seismic geological effects caused by recent earthquake activities.

He also pointed out that earthquakes generate geological effects such as: soil liquefaction phenomena; lateral relaxation; surface rupture; topographic effect; dry landslide and block falls.
