On August 24, 1962, the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, better known as the Bridge over Lake Maracaibo, was inaugurated.
This road structure owes its name to the Zulian-independence hero Rafael Urdaneta. It is the largest bridge in Latin America, and it is still one of the largest reinforced concrete structures in the world.
Its bases are anchored at the bottom of Lake Maracaibo, at a depth of 60 meters (to allow boats up to 45 m high to enter the lake and light 235 m) and it has two lanes in each direction.
It supports an average traffic of 45,000 vehicles per day. This bridge made it possible to link both sides of the lake and quickly connected the city of Maracaibo with the rest of Venezuela.
