Geological Survey of Colombia warned of increased activity at the Puracé volcano

The Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) warned of a significant increase in seismic activity at the Puracé volcano, located in the department of Cauca, in the southwest of the country.

At the site, ash emissions that reached a height of up to 2,100 meters were detected, as well as an increase in seismic energy over the past week, reported the Venezolana de Televisión website.

“The alert status of the Puracé volcano and the Coconucos volcanic chain remains yellow and it is not ruled out that there may be increases in activity or new emissions that need to be reported,” the agency said.

Faced with this situation, the authorities suspended flights at Popayán airport due to the accumulation of ash on the runway.

In addition, an increase in the temperature of emissions and persistent thermal anomalies were detected inside the crater, which were identified by thermographic cameras and satellite observations.

Colombian authorities said that permanent monitoring of the volcano continues and urged the population not to access the upper part of the volcanic chain, to keep informed only through official channels and follow the instructions of local and departmental governments, as well as the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
