Government of Nepal declares national mourning for victims of the flood

The Government of Nepal declared this Monday, September 07, a day of national mourning for the victims of the massive flood that occurred on August 26, coinciding with the 13th day of the tragedy.

On its website, Radio Miraflores points out that after the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayas that devastated the Rasuwa district with floods and left at least 1,300 dead, the South Asian country mourned as a formal act of collective mourning.

In this regard, the guideline was to set the national flag to be flown at half mast in government buildings, in Nepalese embassies and diplomatic missions abroad.

It is specified that this national mourning takes place 13 days after the disaster, a period that marks the funeral rituals of the Hindu tradition.

In addition, the Última Noticias portal specifies that in this country, with a Hindu majority, periods of mourning last 13 days, during which close family members stay at home and relatives visit them to pay their respects. On the last day, rituals are performed to pray for the souls of the deceased.

For its part, the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, in its latest report, reported that the death toll increased to 1,355 and the number of missing persons remained at 4,996.

Of the total number of missing persons, about 589 are foreign citizens. The Nepalese Government has only been able to deliver 98 bodies to their respective families, as the identification process continues to be the biggest challenge.

21,402 personnel belonging to the Army, Police and Armed Forces are still deployed in the field, which has allowed some 13,396 people to be assisted.

Specialized rescue teams from India, China, South Korea and the United States are on site, searching through debris, damaged structures and tunnels, as it is estimated that about 500 hydroelectric project workers are trapped in different sectors.

Last Friday, September 4th, two workers were rescued, while on Saturday, emergency crews removed a Chinese citizen from the facility.

The massive flood mainly impacted the districts of Rasuwa, bordering the Chinese region of Tibet, as well as Nuwakot and Dhading.
