Guatemala activated an evacuation operation this morning in communities settled on the slopes of the Fuego volcano due to the increase in their explosive activity.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) confirmed that more than 1,500 people have already been transferred to five authorized shelters in the area

The ashfall affects about 29,000 people in different municipalities near the colossus, while the most dangerous villages remain almost empty after forced exits.

The Institute of Seismology and CONRED do not rule out that the eruptive phase will continue in the next few hours, so they insist on responding to official statements and complying with the calls of emergency teams.

The recommendation for residents is to evacuate on their own if they perceive conditions that put their physical integrity at risk.
