Guterres warns at the UN about the risk of a global “great fracture” and technological lack of control

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, issued a stern warning to the General Assembly about the existential threats facing humanity, driven by the unregulated advance of artificial intelligence, the development of lethal autonomous weapons and the increasing transfer of power to private corporations to the detriment of State sovereignty.

During his speech, the highest representative of the international organization denounced the profound impunity that dominates the world scene. Guterres criticized that the international community tolerates continuous human rights violations, the instrumentalization of hunger as a method of war and systematic attacks against humanitarian personnel in conflict zones. He also emphasized that the climate crisis has ceased to be a future projection and has become a harsh daily reality.

In this context, the head of the international organization warned of the imminent risk that lies in wait for the international community: “We are facing the imminent danger of the 'great fracture', a dangerous division of the planet into two rival blocs that would isolate international trade, finance, science and security systems.”

To curb this hegemonic drift, Guterres urged the international community to bet on interconnected multipolarity and to establish global regulatory frameworks that guarantee stability and resilience in technological development, preventing competition from ending in irreversible divisions.

He also recalled that the Charter of the United Nations constitutes the fundamental and irreplaceable tool for overcoming current crises and preserving multilateral cooperation.
