Homicides with firearms in Peru reach 77.5%

During the first twenty days of Keiko Fujimori's administration, 105 homicides were recorded, equivalent to an average of six murders a day in Peruvian territory.

The figure represents a sustained increase in lethal violence, with 77.5% of cases committed with firearms, the highest rate recorded in the last nine periods of government, international media reported.

The official presentation of these data was scheduled for today by the National Police, however it was suspended without a new date on the grounds of force majeure. This fact raised questions about transparency in the management of criminal information and about the security strategies implemented at the start of the new term of office.

Lima tops the list with 34 fatalities, followed by La Libertad with 12 and Callao with 8. The concentration of cases in the capital and in northern regions shows the expansion of criminal networks and the inadequacy of territorial control operations.

Faced with this scenario, Executive sources do not rule out the departure of the general commander of the National Police. The possible removal of the high command would occur in a context of pressure for immediate results in the fight against crime, while official figures confirm a deterioration in citizen security since the beginning of the administration.
