Hurricane Karina reaches Category 4 and is making rapid progress across the Pacific

Hurricane Karina strengthened unusually rapidly in the Pacific Ocean on Monday to reach a powerful Category 4, driven by warm sea temperatures and favorable weather conditions.

The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicated that the system is moving to the west after having intensified rapidly since its formation as a hurricane last Sunday, according to the international press.

When it climbed to category 4, the phenomenon fell squarely into the range of potentially catastrophic damage. The Saffir-Simpson scale places sustained winds at this level capable of destroying roofs and solid structures, knocking down trees and power lines, and causing prolonged cuts to basic services in impacted areas.

Currently, the meteor is located about 1,640 kilometers west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, in Mexican territory, recording maximum sustained winds of 233 kilometers per hour.
