Landslide causes severe damage in Rasuwa district in Nepal

A massive landslide and rockslide in the border area between Nepal and the Tibet region generated severe floods and landslides in the Bhote Koshi River valley, in the Nepalese district of Rasuwa. Local authorities and risk management teams activated emergency protocols in the face of the advance of the mass of sediments that affected villages and strategic infrastructures in the mountainous region.

The collapse of the slope caused an avalanche of mud that moved at high speed along the basin, affecting the passability of the main routes and interrupting basic services. Preliminary evaluations confirm that the rising of the river and the accumulation of mud caused damage to several hydroelectric power plants and high-voltage transmission lines located along the valley.

Security forces, civil protection personnel and rescue teams were deployed in the area to carry out search tasks, evacuate vulnerable families located on the slopes and provide medical care to those affected. In the same way, government authorities set up temporary shelters and coordinated the delivery of emergency humanitarian assistance.

Meteorological and geological agencies warned of the latent risk of new landslides due to land instability and soil saturation in the Himalayan mountain range. Faced with this scenario, the authorities urged the population to remain alert to the instructions of the security forces and to avoid traffic along the riverbanks and vulnerable areas.
