Landslide on the border between China and Nepal leaves five dead and 558 missing

A devastating landslide at a border crossing between the People's Republic of China and Nepal left five people dead and at least 558 missing. The avalanche directly affected the Xizang Autonomous Region, in the southwest, as confirmed by the regional emergency management department.

Among the people whose whereabouts are still unknown, relief agencies have been able to identify 260 foreign citizens in a preliminary way. The damaged area corresponds to a cross-border transit point where workers, residents and travelers converged at the time of the landslide.

The disaster struck last Wednesday and destroyed key infrastructure at the checkpoint. Specialized search and rescue teams managed to enter the epicenter of the emergency at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, where they deployed debris tracking and removal tasks in highly complex conditions.

Relief operations are being intensively deployed with the support of technical contingents to locate potential survivors. Regional authorities remain on alert evaluating soil stability to prevent new landslides in the border strip.
