In the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Mexican National Team won its first victory in the tournament after beating South Africa 2-0, in a spectacular match from the Mexico City Stadium, the first in history to host a third world cup match.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada and other authorities celebrated the Mexican team's two goals.

President Sheinbaum experienced the opening match from one of the Fan Zones installed in Mexico City and was specifically at Deportivo Hermanos Galeana, in the Gustavo A. Madero mayor's office.

The president was caught celebrating effusively, with flag in hand, the two goals that her country's eleventh scored against the South African, one in the 9th minute and the other in the 67th minute of the match, with which she sealed her victory.
