The neoliberal Government of Javier Milei has implemented a new "Migration Security Program “, arguing the need to strengthen security and optimize the investigation of crimes at the country's border crossings. The initiative seeks to strengthen the operational capacities of the National Directorate of Migration and the various security bodies, marking a significant change from the historic policy of migratory openness that had characterized Argentina.

The Executive maintains that the region is affected by irregular or illegal migratory movements, which it considers to be a direct threat to national security. This new official position represents a marked contrast with the country's historical tradition, which has traditionally promoted policies favorable to the entry and reception of foreigners.

The measure, articulated through DNU 366, has been met with strong rejection by civil society. More than 150 organizations have denounced the content of these regulations, describing it as xenophobic and warning about the possible negative consequences for migrants' rights in Argentine territory.
