Minister Juan Ramírez: More than 792,000 tons of debris removed in La Guaira after earthquakes

During a tour of Caraballeda in the state of La Guaira, the sector vice president of Public Works and Services, Juan José Ramírez, together with representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), reported that they have removed more than 792,000 tons of debris after the earthquake of last June 24.

Speaking to Venezolana de Televisión, he stated that “with the decent and safe clearance plan that we have articulated precisely with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) since the first day we began this entire evaluation process for reconstruction in order to respond to the emergency, we have achieved more than 37% of all the two million 100 thousand tons that were generated as a result of the seismic event.”

For her part, the regional director of UNDP for Latin America and the Caribbean, Michelle Muschett, indicated that the official mission to Venezuela is primarily based on an expression of solidarity with the Venezuelan people.

Muschett reported that they have been at Venezuela's disposal since the ground up of the events. “One of the main contributions of UNDP (...) has been the use of technology, drones, and artificial intelligence to determine the impact of the earthquake,” he said.

He also explained that this work is essential because the generation of evidence allows authorities and specialists working for reconstruction to determine the magnitude of the damage in order to establish priorities and funding needs.
