More than 20,000 hectares are consumed by forest fires in Colombia

More than 20,000 hectares of vegetation have been destroyed in Colombia due to a series of large forest fires affecting various regions of the national territory. The environmental emergency has mobilized disaster prevention and response agencies, in the midst of a contingency characterized by the rapid spread of flames and the severe impact on local ecosystems.

Colombian authorities warned that there are signs of human intent behind the origin of several of these sources, so investigations have been launched to determine the corresponding responsibilities. This deliberate action is added to a highly vulnerable environment, where prolonged drought has reduced moisture levels in soils and accelerated combustion in undergrowth areas and forests.

The worsening of weather conditions responds to the impact of a climate phenomenon that has generated a drastic rainfall deficit and a sustained increase in temperatures in much of the country. These meteorological variables, combined with strong winds, have hampered the suffocation and rescue tasks carried out by fire departments and brigade members in places that are difficult to access.

Faced with the seriousness of the accidents, risk management committees remain alert in the areas with the greatest threat and have reiterated their call to the population to avoid unauthorized burns and report suspicious activities. While efforts to control active foci persist, the damage balance continues to be evaluated due to the irreversible loss of vegetation cover and biodiversity.
