The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) records alarming numbers after accumulating 5,515 confirmed cases and 2,642 deaths since its detection. The fatality rate of the current outbreak stands at 48%, which shows the seriousness of the health crisis in the region.
According to Telesur, the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu account for the majority of infections. The rapid spread of the Bundibugyo strain has been facilitated by low population immunity and the lack of approved vaccines with specific effectiveness to combat this variant.
In view of the evolution of the epidemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) maintains its highest international alert level. Public health experts warn of the risk of spread to neighboring countries with fragile health systems, so they urge to intensify the deployment of medical aid and containment interventions in vulnerable areas.
