New York Police officers arrested nearly a hundred demonstrators in downtown Manhattan, in the midst of a massive day of protests that brought together more than 1,250 people to express their firm rejection of the presence of the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN).
Telesur highlighted that the arrests and the extensive deployment of security forces took place while the demonstrators took strategic streets close to the multilateral complex, expressing social and international discontent with the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The police actions sought to contain the protest groups within the framework of the strict security operation deployed by the diplomatic meeting.
The popular mobilization reflected the growing global condemnation of the military offensive in the Gaza Strip and the geopolitical decisions adopted by Tel Aviv, scourges that marked the convulsive scenario in which the Israeli president delivered his speech this Thursday before the plenary of the General Assembly of the international organization.
