Nepal asks for international help after glacial avalanche that leaves more than 600 fatalities

The Government of Nepal requested support from the international community to accelerate search, rescue and humanitarian assistance efforts after a devastating avalanche of ice and rocks generated by the rupture of a glacier on the southern slope of Lirung Peak. The natural disaster has left a preliminary toll of more than 600 people dead and keeps nearly 3,000 citizens waiting to be evacuated from affected areas.

According to reports issued by the Red Cross, the magnitude of the structural and environmental impact could reach more than 93,000 people in neighboring regions. Faced with this scenario, local relief forces deploy continuous operations in hard-to-reach areas to speed up the identification of victims and provide urgent medical assistance to affected communities.

For his part, the foreign minister of Nepal urged the nations of the world to make real commitments in the fight against climate change, stressing that his country is responsible for just 0.01% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite its reduced carbon footprint, the nation is among the territories most exposed to the consequences of global warming and the loss of the glacial mantle.

Finally, the Nepalese authorities announced that they will coordinate efforts with teams of researchers from the People's Republic of China to determine the scientific causes of the collapse and install an early warning system in high mountain basins. This joint initiative seeks to reinforce the security of vulnerable populations and prevent future contingencies of socio-natural origin.
