Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex records explosion and generates 900-meter smoke column in Chile

The Chilean National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) reported an explosion in the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex, located in the Ñuble region, which generated a column of smoke and ash 900 meters high above the crater level.

According to the report of the Volcanological Observatory of the Southern Andes (OVDAS), the eruptive event showed incandescence and projection of pyroclastic material towards the northwestern sector of the massif, accompanied by earthquakes linked to internal fluid dynamics.

Faced with this activity, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) decided to maintain the Yellow Technical Alert and extend the security perimeter around the crater to two kilometers to restrict access to the communes of Pinto and Coihueco as a protective measure for the population.

Technical authorities indicated that surface activity returned to its usual parameters one hour after the event; however, the occurrence of new eruptive pulses of similar or greater magnitude is not ruled out, so permanent monitoring will be maintained throughout the foothills.
