Number of deaths from Ebola in Congo exceeds one thousand

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo amounts to 1,333 people, according to the latest bulletin from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) for July 21.

The epidemic was officially declared on May 15 in the eastern region of the African country, international media reported.

The health report counts 2,536 confirmed cases since the beginning of the outbreak, including both deceased and infected patients who are still active, and with these data, the lethality of the disease stands at 40.7%. Epidemiological surveillance indicates that 738 people remain in isolation or hospitalization, while 506 individuals have overcome the infection and received medical discharge, and the contact tracing rate reaches 77.2%.

The spread of the virus has affected five Congolese provinces to date, including Ituri, which has the highest number of infections, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo, the latter located in the east and central-north of the national territory. The INSP warns that contact tracing mechanisms have significant deficiencies and require urgent strengthening to contain the spread of the pathogen.

The institute's specialists stress that the epidemic is going through a phase of continuous transmission with high viral circulation, although they clarify that recent variations in data must be analyzed with caution due to delays in notification systems and the gradual consolidation of information collected in affected areas.
