PAHO issues epidemiological alert for increase in measles cases in the region

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an epidemiological alert this Saturday for a severe increase in cases of measles, classifying the risk to public health as “very high”, due to the increase in mortality and the spread of mass events in the nations of the Americas, so the entity urged strengthening vaccination against this disease.

The agency reports that this year 47,500 measles infections were confirmed in 16 countries in the region and 44 deaths, a figure that drastically exceeds the 15,000 cases registered in 2025.

PAHO noted that social vulnerability and unequal access to medical care facilitate the spread of the virus, one of the most contagious conditions in the world, in traditionally excluded communities.
