“Potentially deadly storm surge” alert off US coast due to storm Bertha

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States (USA) reported that Tropical Storm Bertha could cause floods and a “potentially fatal storm surge” on the coasts of three coastal states of the North American country.

“Coastal flooding is possible due to Hurricane Bertha on the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico,” warned the institution, which issued a “potentially deadly storm surge” alert for the coasts of Alabama, Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana.

In the morning hours, the center of Bertha, the second tropical storm of the season, was about 165 kilometers (100 miles) south-southwest of Panama City, Florida, and 280 kilometers (175 miles) southeast of Mobile, Alabama.

The NHC indicated that a slight strengthening of the storm is still possible this Tuesday, followed by a gradual weakening in the middle of the week, international media report.
