President of Guatemala took action in the face of a crisis over fuel prices

The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, offered a message to the nation from the National Palace of Culture to establish a position in the face of the situation generated by the increase in fuel prices. The president attributed the rise in costs to the aftermath of the conflict in the Middle East and its direct impact on global energy markets.

The speech of the Head of State came after several days of demonstrations and blockades on the main roads of Guatemalan territory. During his speech, Arévalo recognized the discomfort of citizens at the rising cost of living and pointed out that the value of a barrel of oil has reached prices not seen in decades, affecting the country's economy in a generalized way, Telesur said.

“The world has been facing an energy crisis for months; the conflict in the Middle East has generated a situation described as the most serious in recent history for fuel markets,” said the president during his message to the country. The televised intervention was carried out without the presence of the media, after harsh criticism for the absence of the ruler at previous information conferences on the blockades.

Faced with this scenario, the Guatemalan Executive implemented a maximum consumer price scheme to mitigate the impact on family budgets, setting the ceiling cost at 39 quetzals for diesel and regular gasoline, and 41 quetzals for super gasoline. The authorities indicated that they will maintain supervision of the domestic market in the face of international fluctuations in crude oil.
