President of Türkiye opposes UN mandate to atrocities in Gaza

This Tuesday, during his address to the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations, the President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, focused his message on denouncing the devastation in the Gaza Strip and the paralysis of international organizations in the face of Israel's military actions.

The Turkish president differentiated his position by making a direct call for compliance with the founding principles of the UN Charter to stop what he described as an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. In this regard, he urged the international community to formalize the recognition of Palestinian sovereignty as an inescapable step towards justice.

“We will continue to carry the voice of the sovereign State of Palestine and from this rostrum we want to make the voice of Palestine heard,” said Erdoğan, while urging nations that have not yet taken that step: “We call on those who have not recognized the State of Palestine to do so.”

The head of state also recalled the purpose of the multilateral organization, citing its constituent document: “When the Charter of the United Nations was signed, we, the peoples of the United Nations, decided to save future generations from the war that twice has led humanity to untold suffering and to preserve the fundamental rights of man and the human person.”

With these statements, the Turkish leader marked the differentiating element of his intervention by contrasting the UN's historic commitments with international inaction in the face of the conflict, reaffirming that there will be no lasting stability in the region without the consolidation of an independent Palestinian state.
