Rainfall in Puerto Rico reduces extreme drought slightly to 37.14%

The passage of a recent tropical wave and the rainfall recorded in various regions of Puerto Rico allowed a slight reduction in extreme drought in the island territory, falling from 39.49% to 37.14% over the past week, according to the United States Drought Monitor.

Despite the recorded decrease of 2.35 percentage points, the scientific entity warned that the current level of rainfall is still insufficient to reverse the water crisis that severely impacts the northeast, as well as the central and southern coastal strips of the island.

The rainfall of the last few days had a positive impact on drinking water reserves; in particular, the Carraizo reservoir, one of the main sources of supply for the metropolitan area, experienced an increase of 87 centimeters in its operational level.

Water monitoring agencies noted that a sustained pattern of torrential rains is required in hydrographic basins to achieve full recovery of reservoirs and ensure normalization in water supply.
