Russia and UNICEF promote project to expand access to drinking water and health in Cuba

The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Havana and the representation of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Cuba held an institutional coordination meeting this Thursday to kick off a joint project aimed at strengthening drinking water services and medical care on the island, through the use of technologies based on renewable energy.

During the diplomatic meeting between the Russian chargé d'affaires, Sergey Parkómenko, and the representative of UNICEF in the nation, Sunny Guidotti, it was detailed that the program will focus its operations on various regions of eastern Cuba, covering the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. The initiative is expected to directly impact nearly 190,000 people, with special emphasis on water and health care for 45,000 pregnant women and newborns.

The Russian diplomatic delegation emphasized that the measure seeks to guarantee essential rights and promote compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, through the installation of sustainable pumping and drinking water treatment systems.

The parties ratified their commitment to expedite the implementation stages of the project to alleviate the situation of water supply and basic health services in the beneficiary territories.
