The Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation has expressed its deep concern at the instability in Lebanon, urging the parties involved to strictly preserve the agreed ceasefire and to respect the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Arab country.
Moscow attributes the worsening of the crisis to persistent external pressures and influences that, it warns, undermine diplomatic efforts to consolidate peace in the region.
This statement comes in direct response to the recent announcement by the Israeli authorities to maintain an indefinite military presence in border security zones. The Israeli minister, Yisrael Katz, confirmed this morning that his country's army will continue to be positioned in strategic areas bordering Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip. According to the official, these areas will be the subject of operations aimed at destroying infrastructure, both surface and underground, that they consider a threat.
Tel Aviv's position marks a clear divergence with international expectations and recent negotiations mediated by the United States. While the international community and various regional actors are pressing for a complete withdrawal of troops from southern Lebanon, the Israeli government has reiterated that it will not dissociate the Lebanese front from its national security objectives, maintaining its freedom of action against Hezbollah regardless of the agreements signed in other dialogue scenarios.
Tension remains at critical levels, especially after warnings issued from Tehran about the lack of guarantees in peace commitments and the persistence of Israeli attacks in the vicinity of Beirut. Meanwhile, the Lebanese Government continues to coordinate its negotiating delegation for the next round of talks in Washington, scheduled for the week of June 22, seeking to reach a comprehensive agreement to end hostilities.
